Frick on a stick with a brick...

I started writing a review of P.O.D.'s new album but I never finished it. I also started writing a review where I bash the schmit out of 10,000 BC but I never finished that either. The fact is, I'm so busy with work, moving, and being sick (again) that any and all free time is being dedicated to building the new site, or reading stuff to review and use as content for the site. There's just not enough hours in the day to write stuff on here AND on the under-construction site. So bare with me guys. I'm working hard on the site. I promise it'll be worth the silence and long wait.

In the meantime, I'll leave you with these few random recommendations:

P.O.D.'s new album is different, and unexpected, but it just may be their best work since Satellite.

John Mayer is completely underrated. The dude gets a lot of flack but the fact is, he's an incredibly talented guitarist, a brilliant song writer, and damn close to a musical genius. Pay him some attention. Oh yeah, and he's hilarious.

This is way late but... 10,000 BC sucks. Big time. Terrible story. Terrible acting. Mediocre special effects. Bad direction. Just plain bad.

Books I'm currently reading, planning on reading, or re-reading for the new site:
Watchmen
The New Frontier
Kingdom Come
V For Vendetta
Arkham Asylum
Runaways Vol 1-3
Wanted
Y The Last Man
Faker
The Amory Wars Vol 1
Invincible Vol 1 - 7
DMZ
and many more. Stay tuned guys.

21

21

Starring: Jim Sturgess (The Other Boleyn Girl, Across The Universe), Kevin Spacey (Superman Returns, The Usual Suspects), Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns, Win A Date With Tad Hamilton!), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix Trilogy, Mission Impossible III)

Written by: Peter Steinfeld, Allan Loeb,
Based on the novel "Bringing Down The House: Ben Mezrich

Directed by: Robert Luketic

Synopsis/Plot: "'21' is the fact-based story about six MIT students who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings."

My Thoughts: This is overdue, so I'm going to keep this very short and sweet. Go watch this movie! Its incredibly good.

Every cast member did a great job. Kevin Spacey delivers, as usual. He's so talented, and can play it all. He goes from nice mentor guy, to A-Hole F-Face with ease. He doesn't disappoint. Jim Sturgess does very well in the lead role as well. You really feel for the guy when he's down, and you totally cheer him on when he's on a roll. Laurence Fishburne is a bad ass. 'Nuff said there.

But the big surprise hit of the movie: Kate Bosworth. I really didn't expect too much from her but she did a great job as well. Stole every scene she was in, in my opinion. She played this very confident, sexy girl, and it was just very different from what I've seen her do before. When I see Bosworth I immediately think back to Win A Date With Tad Hamilton! It was the first film I saw her in, and she played such a bubbly, adorable, girl-next-door type character, with her smiles and quirky lines. And then of course there was Superman Returns, where her Lois Lane was very ... "normal" for lack of a better word. There was nothing particularly amazing about her Lois. So I went into 21 with low expectations for Miss Bosworth, but she proved me wrong and then some. Very fun, very sexy, and if I had been the main character in this movie, I would've chased after her too.

The other big surprise was the direction of the film. This director is responsible for such mediocrities as Monster In Law, Win A Date With Tad Hamilton!, and Legally Blonde. So its a shocker that this movie didn't leave me wanting to walk out of it, let alone impress me as much as it did. Assume that the 3 aforementioned movies were necessary for him to pay his bills, but this one is actually what the guy is capable of. The visuals and the editing are both top-notch, and its obvious to me that Bosworth's great performance was largely due to Luketic's direction. Watch this director, I get the feeling he's going to have some great stuff coming up.

So again, go watch 21. And after watching the film, buy the novel, Bringing Down The House. I'm definitely buying it. Maybe I'll take a trip to Vegas, count some cards, get my ass kicked, and get rich quick.

Lack of Updatage

I just wanted to take a moment and explain why this joint hasn't been getting updated much. There's several reasons.

First off, I'm in a crazy transitional stage where I'm working a lot of hours at work, to save up a lot of money, so I can move in to my new apartment sometime next month. I also need to not fall behind on my car payments so working is a pretty big priority.

My lack of free time means I don't get to go out to the movies often. I haven't been out to the theatres since Jumper and while there's a few flicks out right now I really want to watch, it may be a while before I can check 'em out.

Lastly, any free time I do have, I've spent on a few projects. I'm still working on my graphic novel. I've got the entire thing outlined pretty good. As it stands at the moment, it looks like it'll be about the length of 9 standard comic issues. Once I have the actual first issue completely scripted, I'm going to pass it on to a young and amazing artist, who I hope will love it and illustrate it for me.

The other project I'm working on is a full on website to replace this blog. It'll have a section for movies, music, comics, art, etc. And I'll update it with news, reviews, op'ed pieces, and anything else I can scrape up. I've been listening to a lot of new music in particular lately, and I can't wait to share my thoughts on them soon. I'll continue to update this blog as often as I can in the meantime, but you can look forward to a much bigger, fuller, and much more informative site soon enough.

Okay, that's all the time I have for now. Here's just a quick list of the movies I intend to see in the next few weeks:

10,000 B.C.; Vantage Point; Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!; The Spiderwick Chronicles; The Other Boleyn Girl; Penelope; No Country for Old Men; and Charlie Bartlett

And here's some of the new music I'm diggin' lately: Coconut Records - "Nighttiming"; Die Mannequin - "Unicorn Steak"; and Decomposure - "Vertical Lines A" Full reviews on those bands and records coming soon.
